HOW TO FEED
We designed our freeze-dried food to be soft and easy to rehydrate. Our pets require at least 60% moisture in the food they eat for proper digestion. Adding water to this food IS required. Follow the feeding instructions below:
- SCOOP: Measure the amount of the freeze-dried food for your dog or cat using a measuring cup.
- SOAK: Measure ¾ cup of liquid for every 1 cup of food and add water, pet-safe broth, raw goat milk, etc. on top of the food. Let the liquid absorb into the food to rehydrate.
-
SERVE: When ready, serve to your pet.

FAQs
Each four-legged friend will metabolize food differently based on their activity level, breed, age, etc. Refer to the feeding chart in the image section of this page as a guideline or use our Feeding Calculator to get a custom recommendation for feeding your pet.
Frozen food should be stored in the freezer until ready to thaw. If thawing in the refrigerator, we recommend placing portions in a food-safe container with a lid. Thawed food can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Once thawed and served, the food can safely sit out at room temperature for a maximum of 3 hours.
Freeze-dried food should be stored in a cool, dry place like a pantry or cupboard until ready to feed. Once rehydrated and served, the food can safely sit out at room temperature for a maximum of 3 hours. Rehydrated freeze-dried food can also be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Steve’s Real Food has strict ingredient sourcing requirements, high manufacturing standards, and conducts rigorous testing to ensure each batch of our food is safe for you and your pet. Follow the same safe handling standards you would for your human family’s raw meats - wash your hands, utensils, and any surfaces that come in contact with the food and keep food stored properly at appropriate temperatures. If there is any dry ice left in the box when it arrives, wear gloves to remove and discard it. Never leave dry ice in unsecured areas within reach of pets or children.
As you should when switching your cat or dog to any new food type, we recommend a gradual transition by mixing your pet’s current food with the new raw food over 7-10 days. Learn more about transitioning here.
Not all pets are excited about trying something new, and cats can be especially finicky when a new element is added to their feeding routine. Try these tips to entice your cat or dog to eat:
- Mix your pet’s old food and the raw food together thoroughly to prevent them picking out the original food.
- Use the raw food as a treat or add it as a topper to their current food.
- Serve the raw food at different temperatures; slightly warmed (never cooked) food enhances the aroma.
- Set designated meal times rather than leaving food out all day.
