How to Dispose of New Insulation in Frozen Boxes
Sustainability is one of our core values, and we are constantly on the hunt for new technologies and products that help us reduce our environmental impact. That's why you may notice that the liner in your frozen order looks a little different than before. Your frozen food needs to stay safe, fresh, and (of course) FROZEN! We've chosen high-performance, compostable insulation as an environmentally-friendly option. Learn more about how it helps us (and you!) stay "green" and how to properly dispose of it.
2 Easy Disposal Options
**Note: Remove the plastic film first! This can be recycled at local collection sites with grocery bags.
Dissolve Down the Drain: Dissolve the foam panels easily in your sink (or bathtub)! The foam is safe for drains, septic systems, and waste treatment centers.
First, plug your sink and fill it with several inches of water for about a minute. Then, place the foam panels in the sink and swirl it around with your fingers to agitate the water. You'll see the liner begin to foam, break up, and dissolve within a minute or two. Finally, drain the sink and rinse away remnants. You can also leave water running over the foam until it dissolves completely.
Head's up: Starch can be sticky when wet and may stain or damage concrete, asphalt, decks, and other surfaces. Always dissolve it thoroughly and rinse the area - surfaces may be slick.
Compost at Home: The foam insulation is compostable at home. Composting enriches the soil and avoids the creation of methane, which occurs when biodegradable products go to a landfill. If home composting is not an option for you, Green Cell Foam is also certified industrial compostable. A growing number of cities collect food scraps and packaging for industrial composting. Here's a map from the Sustainable Packaging Coalition.
What NOT to Do:
-
Don't put in home recycling bin
-
Don't dissolve on hard surfaces
-
Don’t throw it in the trash (you can toss anything in the garbage, but we specifically chose this insulation to help us all be more sustainable!)
FAQs
Q: How much water should I use to dissolve the foam?
We recommend using enough warm water to completely submerge the foam so it's easier to dissolve. Then, simply rinse your sink until there is no residue.
Q: Is it ok for the foam to go down the drain?
Yes! The foam is safe for drains, septic systems, and waste treatment centers.
Q: What do I do with the plastic?
If the foam inside your box was encapsulated in a plastic wrap, please take the plastic film to a local collection site - just like how you recycle plastic grocery bags.
Q: What's in the foam?
It's made of a proprietary blend of vegetable starch and is USDA Certified BioBased. This means it meets government standards for using raw materials derived from nature.
Q: Can I feed it to birds and wildlife (or people and pets)?
No, it is not intended for human or animal consumption. Please dispose responsibly and keep away from pets.
