Can Dogs Eat Candy?

Oct 7, 2026

We love our dogs and spoil them whenever possible, but this doesn’t mean we should share everything with our pups, and especially not candy. Sugar-filled with potentially harmful ingredients, candy is usually never a safe choice.

Can Dogs Have Sugar?

Sugar isn’t poisonous or dangerous for dogs, but that doesn’t mean it is good for them. Dogs can digest sugar, but eating it regularly can contribute to things like weight gain and dental problems, and eating a lot of it at once can cause digestive upset in dogs.

Can Dogs Eat Sugar-Free Candy?

Sugar-free products typically contain artificial sweeteners, like xylitol (also called birch sugar), which is extremely dangerous to dogs. Always check the ingredient list before assuming a candy is safe.

Can Dogs Eat Brown Sugar?

Brown sugar isn't toxic to dogs, but it still isn't a good treat. It is essentially sugar combined with molasses, so it provides little nutritional value for your dog.

Is Peppermint Safe for Dogs?

Plain peppermint leaves are generally okay for dogs in small quantities. Peppermint candy, however, can contain large amounts of sugar, artificial sweeteners, chocolate, or other ingredients that aren't appropriate for dogs. Do not feed peppermint essential oil to dogs because it is highly concentrated.

Can Dogs Have Caramel?

Dogs should not eat caramel. While it isn’t particularly harmful, caramel is made from sugar, butter, and cream, making it very high in sugar and fat.

Can Dogs Eat Gummy Bears?

Gummy bears aren’t good for dogs as they are full of sugar and artificial dyes.

Can Dogs Eat Licorice?

Regular red licorice is generally high in sugar and isn't a healthy treat for dogs. Some varieties also contain ingredients that can be problematic in larger quantities.

Can Dogs Eat Black Licorice?

In addition to being high in sugar, black licorice contains licorice extract, which can cause problems when consumed in large amounts. Large quantities of licorice can potentially affect blood pressure and electrolyte balance.

Can Dogs Eat Twizzlers?

Dogs should not eat Twizzlers. They contain ingredients like corn syrup, sugar, and flour, so they offer little nutritional value.

Can Dogs Eat Skittles?

No, dogs should not eat Skittles. They are full of sugar, corn syrup, and artificial dyes that can cause digestive upset. Their small size and shape also pose a choking hazard for small dogs and puppies.

What Should I Do If My Dog Eats Candy?

Not all candy is harmful to dogs. The type of candy they ate and the quantity are both extremely important.

Check the package for potentially dangerous ingredients, especially:

  • Xylitol (birch sugar)

  • Chocolate or cocoa

  • Raisins or grapes

  • Macadamia nuts

If your dog ate a large quantity, is very small, is showing concerning symptoms, or you're simply unsure whether what they ate is safe, contact your veterinarian.
